Four realistic self care rules
Caring for ourselves is the foundation of our emotional and physical well-being. But what does it mean to take care of yourself truly? And how to understand when this concern is enough? Here are the four rules that will help ensure that we can support ourselves in difficult life circumstances.
1. CARING FOR YOURSELF INVOLVES THE ABILITY TO TALK WITH YOURSELF – Self care rules
For many busy people, the idea of self-care causes protests and rejection. They do not have time for yoga, no money for massage and no strength even for morning exercises. So, at least, they consider it. All this may be true, but they miss an important point: self-care is not, in the main, being able to find a couple of hours a week for classes. This is a way of life in which what kind of relationship you build with you every day and at every single moment is important.
The ability to talk, to find a common language with us largely determines our mood, affects the level of stress and whether we feel depressed or control the situation. A busy day can be seen as a nightmare and time pressure, promising complete exhaustion. And you can – as a life challenge, which develops and harnesses all our strengths. The choice is yours.
Pay attention to how and what you think, and make efforts to get rid of unproductive ways of thinking.
We do ourselves a disservice, ignoring this incredibly significant component of self-care. In fact, no indulgences and little joys will be effective if you are accustomed to cheat yourself, leading to panic and a nervous breakdown. You go for a massage, but do not relax, and endlessly think about work. You come to a yoga lesson, but are not immersed in the process, but are busy comparing yourself with those who practice near you.
Pay attention to how and what you think and make efforts to get rid of unproductive ways of thinking. This is a necessary and quite realistic condition for taking care of yourself.
2. DISTRACTION MAY BE USEFUL, BUT ONLY FOR A WHILE. – Self Care rules
When I ask friends what methods of self-help they practice, they are usually taken to list, which distract themselves from disturbing situations. Some go into drunken reading of romance novels, others “hang up” on the Internet, others go to the cinema.
There is nothing wrong with using any of these tricks from time to time. When emotions go wild or you are squeezed like a lemon, any more active activities or attempts to digest your experiences may require too much cost. At such times, it’s really useful just to switch.
What is not useful is the alignment in which flight from problems becomes your only way of self-help. When you just do what you disconnect, drown out the alarm, avoid or ignore the troubles, you accumulate over time a lot of unworked thoughts and feelings that can increase stress and accelerate burnout, and not vice versa.
3. FIND WAYS TO REWORK YOUR EXPERIENCE EMOTIONALLY – Self Care rules
Balance the usual distractions with activities that will help you sort out the experiences and process them. Still, caring for yourself implies the need from time to time to think about the circumstances that cause stress and to meet with the negative emotions that accompany it.
For example, in front of you are several responsible deadlines that coincide in time. It so depresses you so much that no going to the cinema or other distractions will just help. Instead, it’s better to focus on targeting your stress level. Let’s say do some special relaxation exercises or talk with a colleague.
Ask yourself: “Have I gained access to my thoughts and feelings? Did you see a better perspective for solving your problem? ”
Caring for yourself means attention to your emotions. Each for himself determines what specific activities help him process emotions. One makes life easier for the diary, the other – drawing, talking about a problem with a friend or therapist, the third – prayer or spiritual practice. Do not forget about dancing, exercise, your favorite music. Sometimes it’s enough just to cry well.
The same reading and TV can be useful if you turn to them not with the aim of distraction, but in search of content that is consonant with your problem. When you, for example, read not a lightweight novel, but poems that affect the emotions that you want to work through.
In order to understand whether the activity that you have chosen turned out to be effective, ask yourself: “Have I gained access to my thoughts and feelings? Did you see a better perspective for solving your problem? Did you feel relief and emotional release as a result of these actions? ”If the answer is yes, then you have found something wonderful.
4. TAKE CARE OF YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH
It seems to many of us: in order to “make yourself well,” you need to bring something new, bright and unexpected into your life. Pay a round sum for a special massage course, sign up for a meditation session with a famous guru, come up with a new hobby in the hope of finding something that will inspire us. Of course, all this can be part of personal care, but do not forget about the simple daily procedures that support physical health.
Since you still need to eat, sleep, wash and dress, all these routine actions can become a platform for working out the best habits. Why not take a more conscious approach to choosing quality, healthy food? Change bedtime, and at the same time buy a more comfortable pillow to sleep better?
By showing attention to our body, taking care of our well-being, we show that we value ourselves, that our life is important to us. It does not take a lot of time and money. Maintaining an internal conversation, taking care of your health and maintaining a balance in actions that distract and help work out emotions, you will find yourself on the right path to a good, harmonious life.
